There are moments when light seems to take on a life of its own, filling the world with warmth and turning everything it touches to gold. At the heart of our show is Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, whose text describes this light as “warm and heavy as pure gold.” This idea serves as a thread throughout the production, connecting the beauty of light with our fascination with something precious and worth pursuing. We begin with the warmth and wonder of “Golden Hour.” As the light illuminates us, it becomes dazzling and valuable in “24K Magic.” In “The Ecstasy of Gold,” that fascination becomes a pursuit as we chase and compete for what we believe is waiting at the end. But when the pursuit is over, we discover that the light was never something we could possess. In the final return to Lux Aurumque, the light expands beyond a single source and surrounds everything, revealing that its value was never in what we could hold, but in what it allowed us to see.
